The GREATEST week of the OCHS boys golf season started Tuesday. It was the start of the “Oldham Cup”, a 3-day golf event that mirrors the professional golf tour’s Ryder Cup.
The three local Oldham County high school golf teams compete against each other to earn points. The team with the most points at the end of the 3-day event is declared the Oldham Cup winner and takes home ‘the Cup’. The teams play at three different golf courses (OCCC, Harmony Landing, Nevel Meade), playing three different formats (Best Ball, Alternate Shot, Match Play) for three days in a row (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). The first two formats have two teammates paired up together which requires the coaches to strategically match up those golfers that best compliment each other. The final format (Match Play) is all on the individual golfer going head-to-head against his opponent.
Day 1 Results – (The maximum points earned by any one team could’ve been 4 points.)
Oldham County – 2 pts.
North Oldham – 2 pts.
South Oldham – 2 pts.
As you can see the golf at the Oldham County high schools is quite competitive.
The two Oldham County points were earned by pairings Brandon Hackworth/Colton Gilmet and JD Collins/Matthew Crombie. Hackworth/Gilmet took it to the 9th hole to pull out the win. Collins/Crombie made quick work of the South pairing in six holes. Pairings Grant Larimore/Trevor Becker and Anthony Reynolds/Jacob Buechele battled but came up just a tad short after seven and eight holes of play.
Next up……..Day 2 (Alternate Shot), 4:30 p.m. at Harmony Landing Country Club.
